Pāṇini wrote with almost impossible economy. A word stated once keeps applying to the rules that follow — this carrying-forward is अनुवृत्ति. A heading rule governs everything beneath it — अधिकार. Reading the Aṣṭādhyāyī means holding many threads at once.
